Classes Information

In an inclusive, engaging atmosphere, students are invited to create with aerated cement, recycled paper clay, mixed media, encaustics or basic art welding.

Each class holds both beginners and accomplished artists. Classes are small enough to make it viable for each maker to follow their personal direction. Nurturing the vision in each student, respect is given to the individual’s direction and process.

Students will be working on a variety of mediums following their own compositions, the diversity of directions stimulates each to travel further than they might have moved if all had been following the same path. Students arrive either with an idea of where they’d like to go or they find that idea in the first part of the class.

Given the wide variety of media to work with, people can be going some place totally different than the person sitting next to them. In fact they usually are. The classes are complete with both a teacher and students that are there to support you as you as your progress unfolds.

Mixed Media

The variety of mixed media taught is pretty large, full 3D to relief sculptures with such mediums as paper, cloth, steel, found objects, encaustics, recycled paper clay, bones, nature and aerated cement. The classroom is filled with a great variety of items you are welcome to use.

Autoclaved Aerated Cement

Autoclaved Aerated cement is a ‘green building material that was discovered in Europe in 1910 and has been used in the U.S. for about the past 20 years. Carole discovered it as a sculpting media in 2005. It is a subtractive only medium that lends itself well to a variety of finishing patinas.

Recycled Paper Clay

Recycled Fiber Clay is a fabulous recycled paper clay that grants the user a wide variety of possibilities for creating. This clay is different than any other art store clay as it attributes vary and extend to its ability to attach itself to a wide range of materials including wood and steel. It also works well with water colors and encaustics.

Student Comments

“I can’t say enough about how much I’ve learned in Carole Murphy’s sculpting class! It’s fabulous and she’s fabulous! Even if you think you have zero talent, you’ll quickly learn that you do. Carole is great about giving individual attention and encouragement. If you’re even considering sculpture, this is your opportunity to find out you can do it!”

-Pam Rogers

” …I have been in working studios from San Miguel de Allende, Mexico to Portland, Oregon, as well as some stops in between. Carole’s studio is an unbelievable green house of and for the creative process . I feel comfortable in saying this because there is not just a creative atmosphere, but more so a culture of creative energy. It is a great place to be whether you are a novice or an accomplished artist. You can not help but feel comfortable, to feel accepted, to feel respected and above all to feel safe in a process where mistakes happen. None of what I am sharing would be possible if there was no Carole Murphy.
Carole is a master artist who is willing to take time away from her own passion to help others grow. Carole possesses the ART experience as well as the qualities of an excellent teacher. You can not help but adopt Carole’s enthusiasm, her love for art is contagious.”

-Larry Trueber

"I have been a student of Carole’s for over five years. Her skill as a teacher and artist, I feel, has helped me to improve and expand what I do. I also feel that I have become more confident to try new things. She is kind, empathic, encouraging and super knowledgeable. She is a teacher who is easy to relate to and fun to be with. It’s been fascinating to see her art evolve in beautiful ways.”

-Susan Blumenthal

“The most important thing about the classes Carole offers is Carole. She doesn’t tell you what to do, but is there to help you achieve the art that you want to create… She offers as much or as little help as you want… She lifts you up in every way! And Art happens! Carole has wide experience and expertise that she brings to her own art, and that she gladly shares with her students. I love the other artists working in Carole’s studio — they are all glad to be there and are serious about their work (and they’re fun!). I also love watching them create through sculpting, or encaustics, or mixed media, or … And I gain insights listening to Carole talk through a piece with other students! …she ALWAYS has a tool for that, whatever ‘that’ is. At Carole’s studio, you have everything you need to create the art that you want to create in a supportive, enriching, warm learning environment…I plan to take classes forever! “

-Pam Ledbetter

“Carole’s studio feels like coming home, even when work and life have kept me from coming as often as I would like. As an instructor, Carole is generous with her attention and suggestions, even while deferring to the artist’s own preferences and intuition. The fact that students are able to tour Carole’s own personal gallery of art-including other artists’ work as well as her own–makes a class experience feel like a combination of gallery time and creative play.”

-Elizabeth (Betse) Thielman

“I just want to say that I am so glad I found your class. Art welding has really opened a whole new creative life force in me. The class was so interesting and the community of students are so supportive. I look forward to taking many more classes in this beautiful forested setting.”

-Hana Rucker

"It’s art and community – Carole’s house of art and healing. Every tool you will need is at your fingertips. Carole is a relentless coach who will guide you to your best art. You will get a chance to make things you never thought were possible. She brings out the artist in everyone. You learn to trust what you feel."

-Sherry Wagner

“It is impossible not to have one’s imagination fired up and taking flight when working at Carole’s studio. Her collections of anything that is weird or wonderful makes one feel as if childhood has returned and everything is curious and exciting.”

-Liz Aurilia

"Carole is always searching for new ideas for her own work and innovative ways to create her wonderful sculptures. She is truly an artist who is an accomplished teacher."

-Eileen Holzman

"Thanks for creating such a wonderful place for strangers to become family and friends while creating works of art."

-Joy Haynes

"I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed your class. You’re a great instructor, giving just the right amount of feedback and letting the artist develop in their own time."

-Dianne Erickson

"You are so positive anyone talking to you has to get better. The works done by the students are spectacular, You must be as proud as they are. Its the atmosphere you create. I could tell the difference the minute I walked down the studio stairs. You bring out the best in people, a very special gift, thank you for all the help, patience and latitude you give everyone. Your a Great Artist and Teacher. I only say what others already know."
